John 3:16 -- God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life.
In “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, S.D." Kluger sings these lines in the “Wedding Song”
The custom started long ago
When first the wise men three
Gave gifts of love
To a newborn baby
Wise men, wealthy men from a faraway land, travel a long way to visit a baby laying in a manger (although it most likely a toddler living in a house). These men give gifts to a child whom they do not know, and whose family they do not know. And although they have the wealth to afford a courier, they bring the gifts personally. Each gift chosen carefully and purposefully.
And from that point on we have the tradition of giving presents at Christmas. Or, as any child can tell you, giving wonderful boxes to play with that happen to have some stuff in them.
The song says the custom started with “the wise men three”. But, in actuality, it began before that. He loved us so much that He gave. And look at the circumstances of that gift.
Romans 6:23 says that the payment for sin is death, but God gives us the free gift of life forever in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So, God gave us a gift even when we were not a part of His family. Even when we were actively standing against Him. The first Christmas gift that was given, was the gift of life God sent to us through His Son, Jesus.
And that is one gift we need to accept and play with. Don’t just play with the box.
Lord, help me to see the person who needs my personal gift of love, just like the example set by the wise men to Jesus, and the example God set for me.
